Matthew 13:16 says, “But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear.”

In this passage Jesus was speaking more about spiritual eyes and ears than physical, and in our daily encounters with clients we see a lot of spiritual blindness and deafness at Helping Hands. That is why God has called us to this ministry which is so important in our mountain communities. When I say we, I don’t just mean those who work or volunteer at our centers, but also those who donate and pray and bless Helping Hands in so many ways. We are in this ministry together, reaching those in
spiritual blindness and introducing them to the Lord who heals us (Exodus 15:26).

One example of this that holds a special place in my memory and heart is one client who had lost her child to CPS due to drinking and it was a wakeup call for her. She was faithful to her classes and was willing to do everything they asked to get her son back. When she first started coming she was reluctant to believe our compassion and respect because she had been so beat up by the world. Every time she came our attitude was the same, offering help and hope with a heart of compassion. As we developed a relationship, she began to ask me questions about the hope in me. I was talking about heaven and she commented that I spoke like I really believe it. My reply was that I have seen God move in too many circumstances, seen Him do too many miracles that I would be a fool not to believe. The following week she came for her class with a big smile on her face and tears in her eyes. For the first time she actually saw God move in her circumstances and she recognized that He had been moving but she had just not seen it. One of the joys of this ministry is seeing people recognizing and seeking God. With some clients it’s for the first time, with other clients it’s a return to the path they once walked with our Healer and Savior. Either way, it is joy unspeakable and full of glory (1 Peter 1:8).
